POLITICAL THOUGHTS
                                         By Lou Goldstein

A DIPLOMAT IS A PERSON WHO CAN TELL YOU TO GO TO HELL IN SUCH A WAY....
THAT YOU WILL LOOK FORWARD TO THE TRIP.

CONSERVATIVES ARE PEOPLE WHO WANT THE RULES CHANGED...
SO NO ONE CAN GET RICH THE WAY THEY DID.

A LIBERAL IS A PERSON THAT FEELS IT IS THEIR RESPONIBILITY...
TO SPEND THE CONSERVATIVE'S MONEY.

I do have political thoughts. However, my thoughts are more about  HOW  people arrive at  THEIR  thoughts and  WHY they believe  WHAT  they believe.

I have friends and family that are all over the political spectrum. They range from  liberal  to  conservative  to moderate to  far right  to  far left  and places in between (Wow, I never realized how many people I know.)

The one thing that they mostly have in common is that they get their information from the people who believe the way they do.

For example, those who are conservative tend to watch Fox News... listen to conservative radio talk shows... or read  conservative bloggers.

Conversely those liberal thinkers watch MSNBC, read the  liberal media, listen to  liberal radio, etc.

In other words they have  tunnel vision when it comes to forming their opinions.

In  MY opinion, (Read the chapter. SO YOU HAVE AN OPINION, under the heading ABOUT YOU) if we only get our FACTS from a source or sources that have THEIR  agenda  to promote  we are  generally grossly mislead and given distorted information... absolute lies...and lead us to draw conclusions that are not only biased but untrue.

Therefore, we form our opinions that are not always based on TRUE facts... and when we debate or discuss politics with others we are only  spreading the misinformation  like the common cold.

I do not listen to radio talk shows. I do watch BOTH  Fox news ... AND ... MSNBC nightly (actually I record certain programs and watch them when I can). I heartily recommend  everyone  to do this. You will be amazed how stories get  twisted and facts get distorted. It is actually very revealing. The internet also provides me with some of my political information. Not that this is good but it certainly gives me information that allows me to be completely confused and not knowing what to believe or who to support.

This combination of  FACT ?  gathering has convinced me of one thing. Those political pundits that give us THEIR opinions are, for the most part,  entertainers  not purveyors of The Truth. They are mostly self serving and interested only in furthering their agendas and profiting financially.

I have absolutely no problem with people being paid money to voice their opinions. Whether I agree with them or not... a divergence of opinions  can be both constructive and healthy.

But only if done honestly without INTENTIONAL distortions and outright lies.

It is amazing how you can see a clip from a video on Fox News about a speech that someone made... and then watch a clip from the SAME speech on MSNBC. The slanted editing has the person making the speech saying two different things.

If you don't watch both of them you  miss out on the deception you are getting no matter what side of the fence you are on.

Some people think that this is clever and  "politics as usual."  I think it is pathetic and in some cases very dangerous.

The story about the  Pied Piper of Hamelin  comes to my mind.

This legendary story illustrates how an individual can lead a group to  magically follow  him anywhere, even to walk off the edge of a cliff.

There is an element of people in our world that  are easily lead, for whatever reason, to do things that are beyond unreasonable and can result in utter hatred and destructive behavior.

Bad economic times  can make it very difficult for us to be rational. Those without jobs or losing their homes or suffering other dire consequences are  understandably angry,  frustrated,  scared  and confused.

This combination of the  "Pied Pipers" of today  and people willing to follow them ...are why it is difficult to have rational discussions with some people.

This business of  "Politics as usual"  makes it even  more  difficult for those in government to solve the problems that are facing us as a nation.

Yes, we have  different opinions  as to how we might solve our problems. But what has made this country the great and prosperous country that it has been in the past... is when our leaders  put forth their efforts  to compromise and work together... to find solutions that are in the best interests of the people.

Am I being too naive and simple-minded? Probably.

Is it wrong  to hope that people will change for the better and  reach out to help  rather than to hurt? What do you think?

It's much easier to  blame  someone else than it is to work together with who you might  disagree  with... to work out your differences.

Now you know my political thoughts.

Maybe, considering that I can not control "politics as usual"... I should step back and forget about following politics and stop wasting my time.

But then, I would miss out on all the fun !

Thank you
, I feel much better now.

See you next time,

Lou
